The problem
- When searching large source trees I get a lot of unwanted hits
- For example the other day I was looking for the string dateFormat
$ grep 'dateFormat' * -r

$ find . -regextype posix-extended -name doc -prune -o -type f -regex '.*\.(html|mhtml|autohandler|syshandler|dhandler)$' | xargs grep 'dateFormat'
- but this is ugly and has difficult to remember syntax
- I wanted something to achieve the same functionality
- Wanted to continue to use grep as it is familiar
